Meet the Breeding Birds of Bird Park
Join Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy Board Member and Ornithologist Dr. Jim Saracco as we hike through Bird Park listening and watching for birds. Jim will help us identify the birds we see and hear and teach us a little about the common birds that call our area home.
Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. We have a limited number of binoculars to lend, so feel free to bring your own if you have them. We will meet at the fire circle.
Suitable for adults and children of school age.
Bonus activity! We invite you to bring an item for a “Fill a Nest” gift box in support of Humane Animal Rescue’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. LeboNature is supporting this organization because several members of Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy’s board have delivered injured or sick wild creatures there for care, including some birds. Let’s give back!

GREEN READS The Way Through the Woods: Overcoming Grief Through Nature
Join the Green Reads Book Group for a lively discussion of The Way Through the Woods: Overcoming Grief Through Nature by Long Litt Woon. Ask at the Mt. Lebanon Library Circulation Desk in September.
A month after Woon arrived in Norway from Malaysia as an exchange student, she met Eiolf. They fell in love, married, and settled into their lives together for 32 years. Then Eiolf’s unexpected death at fifty-four left Woon struggling to imagine a life without her partner and anchor. Adrift in grief, she signed up for a beginner’s course on mushrooming — a course the two of them had planned to take together — and found, to her surprise, that the pursuit of mushrooms rekindled her zest for life.

This program will walk you through the process of how to research and select the appropriate plant material.

MLK Day of Service: Winter Seed Sowing
Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy is leading an interactive workshop on winter seed sowing as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service sponsored by Mt. Lebanon’s Community Engagement Advisory Board.

At this workshop, you’ll sow seeds that will germinate when the weather warms. You’ll leave the workshop with a recycled container of sown native seeds. Your plants will be ready to go into the ground in the spring, and you can plant them in your own gardens or join the Conservancy in June to plant the seedlings in our parks.
Seeds, soil and containers provided.
